Green City

Our planet. Our city. Our home.
Climate change and the health of our environment are moving to the top of public concern. Canadians want to see their environment protected.

Helene supports alternate energy development
"As public awareness grows about the dangers of climate change there will be a great deal of opportunity to reduce greenhouse gasses (GHG's) and move to alternate sources of energy. I will be ready for those opportunities and be a strong voice on City Council for green policies that are within the City's ability to finance," said Helene Larocque.

Working with City Council Helene supported the following green initiatives:

  • The purchase of 30 new busses and 40 new C-Train cars. Making public transit more convenient for commuters is the only way to significantly reduce the amount of automobiles on our roads.

  • Planning communities for higher population density around transportation nodes (like LRT stations). This makes public transit more user friendly.

  • Over 15,000 extra hours of public transit is being brought to Ward 3.

  • Ensuring dangerous goods follow the correct transport routes within the City.

  • Building major intersections that are non-signaled to keep traffic moving (less gas burned).

  • Moving the McKnight-Westwinds LRT station ahead by six years.

  • Planning for coordinated water management in Calgary's watershed area. Until regional planning is finalized access to Calgary's water systems is prohibited for new users outside city limits.

  • Enacting a bylaw that prevents pesticides and other pollutants being drained into City waterways.

  • Supporting the efforts of Enmax to develop wind energy.

  • Protecting wetlands in Ward 3.

Enhancing Calgary's green spaces
Calgarians want beautiful places to enjoy within the City's boundaries. In the future new communities will be planned with adequate green space and where wetlands exist they will be and integrated into new development. Helene supports the incorporation of bike paths into new communities and joining them to the existing regional pathway system.

Moving forward ..
Protecting our environment and keeping Calgary beautiful is multifaceted. Moving forward Helene will work with community groups, the private sector and all levels of government to enhance our green space and guard our environment. Where funding is available Helene will work to:

  • Further expand our public transit system.

  • Encourage the development alternate forms of energy such as wind, solar and geothermal.

  • Improve the recycling program to increase participation and reduce costs to Calgarians.

  • Ensure sour gas wells follow all safety and environmental standards.

  • Make sure our parklands meet the recreation needs of Calgarians.

Expanding the recycling program
A lot can be done to protect our environment and build a city that is beautiful to explore. Helene states that "cooperation between civic groups, the private sector and all levels of government will be necessary to make significant progress on improving our environment. I plan to be a strong voice at City Council for policies that are financially responsible and environmentally progressive."
